Helvetica alternatives and clean sans serif lettering
Helvetica is the standard reference for a neutral sans serif, and neutrality turns out to be an extremely specific and difficult design achievement rather than an absence of decisions. Drawing letters that read as neutral is the hardest thing on this site to do by hand — which is exactly why it is worth understanding.
Where it came from
Helvetica was drawn in 1957 by Max Miedinger with Eduard Hoffmann at the Haas type foundry in Switzerland, originally released as Neue Haas Grotesk. It was renamed Helvetica in 1960, when it was licensed for wider international distribution — the new name being a more marketable reference to Switzerland than the original.
It was a refinement rather than an invention: the design reworked the nineteenth-century grotesque sans serifs that came before it, tightening and regularising them into something far more even.
What makes a grotesque read as neutral
Neutrality is produced by a very large number of small consistencies. Break any one of them and the face acquires a personality.
- Terminals cut horizontally or vertically rather than at an angle. The way the C, S and e stop is one of the most recognisable features of the style.
- Tight, closed apertures. The opening of the C or S curls in toward the counter rather than opening outward.
- Nearly uniform stroke weight, with only enough optical correction to stop curves looking thinner than stems.
- A large x-height and consistent letter widths, which produce an even grey when set as text.
- A shared skeleton. The bowl of the b, the d, the p and the q are the same curve, reused.
Why this is hard to draw by hand
Every other style on this site benefits from the irregularity of a human hand. This one is damaged by it. A neutral sans is a systematic design, and systems are what hands are worst at.
That does not make it impossible, but it changes the method entirely: you are not writing, you are constructing.
- 01Rule a baseline, an x-height, a cap height and an ascender line, and do not violate them.
- 02Decide one stroke width and keep it. A ruling pen, a technical pen or a marker of fixed width helps far more than a brush.
- 03Draw the round letters first — o, then c, e, and the bowls of b, d, p, q — and reuse the same curve rather than redrawing it. Trace it if you have to.
- 04Draw the straight letters against a ruler.
- 05Make curved letters very slightly taller than flat ones. An o drawn to exactly the x-height looks short next to an x; the overshoot is what makes them look equal.
- 06Cut every terminal square, on the horizontal or the vertical.
Converting a constructed alphabet
Smoothing is the setting that matters here, and it is measured from your image rather than fixed at a value — which is what stops a hard-cornered constructed alphabet coming back with rounded corners. If the corners still soften, lower it manually. On a face like this, a rounded corner is not a small blemish; it changes the style.
Keep detail moderate. You want faithful edges, not the paper texture underneath them.
An honest word about what you will get
A hand-drawn neutral sans will not look like a professionally drawn one, and no conversion tool changes that. Commercial text faces carry hundreds of hours of optical correction — each letter individually adjusted so that a line of text looks even, which is not the same as each letter being geometrically correct.
What you can make is a clean, consistent sans with a character of its own. Take the exercise for what it teaches: after drawing thirty letters that have to look like they belong together, you will never look at a text face the same way.
